Like the Blue Dress or Blue-White Dress Uniform, the Female Officer Service Uniform may be prescribed for wear during officials and calls of or to U.S. civil officials and officers of the U.S. Armed Forces, as well as officials/offices of foreign governments. But it is the only uniform prescribed for wear when a Marine is assigned as a member of courts-martial or courts of inquiry, and unlike those uniforms it is prescribed when at all times when visiting the White (and temporary White Houses) unless the visit is as a tourist or if the wearer received an individual invitation for a social or official occasion that specified the wear of another uniform.
The Service Dress Uniform comes in three variations, with the Service “A” being the only one that includes both the Service Coat and long-sleeve khaki shirt, but the coat can be removed when inside office buildings within the confines of a military activity or establishment. The “B” version is the simply the “A” uniform without the Service Coat, while the “C” version replaces the “B” uniform’s long-sleeve shirt with a short-sleeve shirt worn with an open collar. Females have the option of wearing a long- or short-sleeve shirt with Service Dress “A,” and a green necktab is worn with both “A” and “B” versions. All three versions are authorized for wear on liberty.
