Marine Corps regulations authorize pin-on Master Gunnery Sergeant rank insignia manufactured in gold-colored metal with a matte finish or stamped black metal or plastic. Our gold insignia features 22K gold plating, while the black version is made of metal.
Gold pin-on metal insignia is reserved for wear on the epaulettes of the Blue Dress Sweater, which Marines may wear at their own option with the Blue Dress “C” uniform (unless the Blue Dress Coat is more appropriate). Insignia is worn on both epaulettes, with the bottom of the insignia placed 3/4-inch from the shoulder seam and its left and right sides equidistant from the front and rear edges of the epaulette.
Black pin-on metal insignia is worn in similar fashion on the epaulettes of the Green Service Sweater and the Tanker Jacket. On organizational clothing items (food services uniforms, aviation uniforms, coveralls) and coats (e.g. All-Weather, Utility, Maternity Working), insignia are placed point up with their vertical center resting on an imaginary line that bisects the angle of the collar point (and thus bisects the insignia as well). The lower outside edges of the insignia should be spaced a half-inch from both sides of the collar.
On the parka of the
Extended Cold Weather Clothing System, a single black metal insignia is centered on the space provided on the zipper flap.
