Reserved for wear only by SNCOs, or Staff Noncom-missioned Officers—an NCO classification unique to the Marine Corps that comprises Enlisted personnel in the E-6 to E-9 grades—the SNCO Evening Dress Uniform may be worn instead of the Blue Dress Uniform for social functions at which civilians would normally wear white or black tie during winter and summer.
And the focal point of this uniform is the Evening Dress Jacket, crafted from dark blue polywool gabardine fabric and a front closure secured with a chain-linked, 27-ligne gold buttons embossed with the Marine Corps’ Eagle and Anchor design, first used on USMC buttons in 1804. The jacket is a round-shell design with rolled collar, peaked cuffs, and scarlet-piped shoulder straps. Arguably the crowning touch is the use of distinctive 1890s gold-on-scarlet insignia featuring a much broader base and more pronounced chevrons.
You will be presented with options to have these special chevrons sewn onto the sleeves of the Evening Dress Jacket after you add it to your shopping cart; this service also includes hemming of the unfinished sleeves with which the jacket would otherwise ship. You will, however, need to
purchase the chevrons separately here.
