Per Marine Corps Uniforms, we offer two versions of the three upward-pointing chevrons and pair of crossed rifles that has served as the insignia of grade for Marine Corps Sergeants since 1958: 22K gold-plated and stamped blacked metal. The gold-plated version is reserved for wear on a single garment, the Blue Dress Sweater, which is worn in lieu of the Blue Service coat on the Blue Dress “C” uniform. The insignia are worn on the epaulettes of both shoulder, centered between the epaulette’s front and rear edges and pointing inboard with the bottom of the insignia .75” from the seam of the armhole.
Black metal pin-on Sergeant chevrons are worn on either the collars or epaulettes of a wide variety of utility-type uniforms and garments. The rules listed above for wear of the gold-plated insignia on the Blue Dress Sweater also apply to the black metal Sergeant insignia worn on the epaulettes of the Tanker Jacket and Green Service Sweater.
When worn on the collars of coats (All-Weather, Utility, Maternity Work Uniform) and organizational clothing items (food services uniforms, coveralls, etc.) and sundry organizational garments with collars (aviation uniforms, coveralls, etc.), placement is based upon an imaginary line bisecting the collar at the angle of the collar point. The insignia is placed so that it points up and its center is on the imaginary bisecting line, then it is positioned (still on the line) so that both lower outside edges of the insignia are 1/2-inch from the collar’s edge.
For the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System parka, center the black metal Sergeant insignia on the space provided on the zipper flap.
