Prescribable for wear during Winter by all male USPHS Officers in the grade of Surgeon (O-4) or higher and an optional purchase for all lower-ranked personnel, the Male Dinner Dress Blue Jacket (DDBJ) Uniform is worn at all official functions where civilian attendees would normally wear black-tie or formal evening wear.
The centerpiece of the DDBJ is the single-breasted mess jacket with semi-peaked lapels, with each front panel adorned with three 35-ligne gilt buttons embossed with the USPHS Commissioned Corps’ emblem of a caduceus and fouled anchor; a pair of 28-ligne buttons linked with a chain is used for closure. The DDBJ’s unbelted, high-waisted (“high rise”) trousers feature a zippered fly front closure. Other required components of the DDBJ Uniform include (but are not limited to) gold shirt studs, gold cummerbund, and white gloves (these must be removed whenever shaking hands).
