U.S. ARMY WOMACK ARMY MEDICAL CENTER UNIT CREST (DUI)

Located near Fort Bragg (formerly Fort Liberty) in North Carolina, the Womack Army Medical Center traces its beginnings to the construction of Camp Bragg Base Hospital in 1918. In 1958 it was transformed into the Womack Army Community Hospital, named after Medal of Honor Recipient Bryant H. Womack. As a Private First Class in the Medical Company of the 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, Womack ignored heavy enemy fire during a firefight near Sokso-ri in order to treat wounded soldiers. Though wounded, Womack was the last Soldier to withdraw from the action; he died from his injuries shortly afterward. He was officially issued the Medal of Honor on 12 January 1953. In October 1991, the facility was given its current designation of Womack Army Medical Center, and in 2000 a new Center—over a million square feet in size—was erected on a 160-plus acre site.

The Womack Army Medical Center Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved while the unit was still designated as a Hospital on 5 December 1969. In 1973, the insignia was redesignated for the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity, Fort Bragg, and then redesignated for the Womack Army Medical Center on 22 August 1995. Its maroon and white colors those of the Army Medical Corps, with the blue field of the decagon—which suggests the neck ribbon pad of the Medal of Honor awarded to Womack—denoting faithfulness and loyalty. Thirteen stars a reference to the original thirteen colonies, with the large one superimposed on the cross representing North Carolina and the twelve smaller stars indicating that North Carolina was the 12th state to ratify the Constitution. Finally, the saltire (“x” shape) formed by the small stars is a reference to Fort Liberty.
